:Transport
MUNI (Municiple Railway) crisscrosses San Francisco completely.
Its Underground rail and buses service an area of about 700 square miles.
Bus Fares recently raised to $1.00 (up from 1993's 85 cents) and cable
cars cost $2.50 (up from 1993's $2). A transit passport is $8 for one day,
$15 for three consecutive days for visitors, and $50 for a full month.
MUNI's streetcars were replaced by the MUNI metro which runs
alongside and under BART* in the downtown area.
The cablecars, which began service in 1873, are the last such
still in service in the world. They have no engines and are operated
by a gripman and a conductor, capacity of about 100 people, at whopping
9 1/2 mph. There are three lines in all, the scenic Powell-Hyde, which
follows a vertical and lateral zigzag course from the corner of powell
and Market streets over both Nob hill and Russian Hill to a turntable at
gaslit Victorian Square in front of Aquatic par near the Maritime museum.
The Powell-Manson line starts at the same intersection and
climbs over Nob Hill before descending to Bay Street just three blocks
from Fisherman's Wharf.
The California Street line begins at the foot of Market Street, cuts
through Chinatown, crests Nob Hill, and continues to Van Ness Avenue.
Taxis are usually called, not hailed, and charge $3.50 for
the first mile and $2 for each additional mile. Companies include:
Vetran's Cab, Desoto Cab, Luxor Cabs, Yellow Cab, Pacific Cab and
Allied Taxi, along with a number of independents.

picture windows, automatic air conditioning and recessed lighting.

cotrol system monitors and adjusts train speed and maintains safe
spaceing.
The part of the Route between San Francisco and Oakland runs
through the longest underwater transit tube in the world, which
opened in Sept 1974, six months after the then general manager
resigned under fire and two years after it was supposed to have
opened.
Ordinary Fares run from $1 (up from 1993's 85 cents) to $5
